Abstract
In recent years, significant advances have been made in enhancing the resistance of components to various kinds of stress induced damage, in particular in the case of cyclic loading and/or in corrosive environments. This special session will focus on analysis and assessment of near surface properties of structural materials after specific surface treatments, e. g. mechanical, thermal, thermochemical or coupled surface treatments and on the evolution of the particular damage processes. Because of their importance for this field of research and development, advanced analysis and modeling methods will be included.
